Our physicians have expertise in the surgical correction of the wide variety of anatomical problems which can cause infertility or miscarriages. Each of our physicians has undergone sub-specialty training in restorative pelvic surgery and has acquired many years of experience in fertility surgery. Drs. Marrs and March are charter members of the Society of Reproductive Surgeons, an allied group of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. Dr. March is nationally and internationally recognized for his expertise in surgical correction of intrauterine adhesions or Asherman's syndrome.
In our state of the art, fully accredited operating rooms and recovery suites, we perform both diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy procedures on a daily basis. Our surgeons are complemented by a staff of board certified anesthesiologists as well as a nursing and surgical technology staff dedicated solely to operative gynecologic procedures. At our facility we are able to offer the same quality of care available in a hospital, but in a private and more personalized enviroment.
Laparoscopy is an outpatient surgical procedure that allows us to directly visualize the pelvic organs, to detect endometriosis or adhesions, to assess the relationship between the ovaries and fallopian tubes, and to verify that the fallopian tubes are open and free of adhesions. If an abnormality is found, corrective procedures can be performed at the same time. Endometriosis can be excised with scissors or vaporized with a laser. Ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids can be excised. The goal of these corrective surgical procedures is to restore normal anatomy and thereby restore fertility.
If an anatomical factor is the only cause for infertility, the surgery may allow conception to occur naturally without additional therapy. If disease has caused extensive changes in the reproductive anatomy preventing the laparoscopic approach from being curative, then a more extensive and invasive surgery may be indicated. Laparotomy is surgical procedure in which a larger incision is made in the abdominal wall to allow for direct manual access to the pelvic organs. A laparotomy is used for microsurgical procedures on the fallopian tubes and ovaries; for excision of large uterine fibroids which penetrate deeply into the uterine wall; and for extensive lysis of pelvic adhesions which cannot be safely corrected by a laparoscopic approach. These surgical procedures are performed at one of our affiliated hospitals.
Hysteroscopy is an outpatient surgical procedure in which a telescope is inserted through the cervix into the uterus. This procedure allows complete visualization of the uterine cavity. If abnormalities are found inside the uterus, corrective surgical procedures can be carried out. Common findings include uterine polyps, uterine fibroids, congenital anomalies, and post-operative uterine adhesions. Our experience extends to more than 8000 procedures. Our doctors have been among the first in the world to perform and refine some of these procedures. Dr. March has developed and published widely accepted protocols for the treatment of uterine adhesions. Through Dr. March's efforts, California Fertility Partners is an international referral center for the treatment of Asherman's Syndrome.
The goal of reproductive surgery is to correct defects, whether congenital or acquired, and to restore the normal anatomic and physiologic relationships that exist between the pelvic organs. Because any interruption of tissue integrity can cause scar formation, great care must be taken to handle and treat these delicate tissues. Our extensive training and experience as reproductive surgeons has instilled a deep respect for the proper care and handling of the pelvic tissues and thus contributes to our high degree of success in this arena.
